Legislative Branch
Do you enjoy playing cricket? Did you watch the IPL matches? Recently, in the IPL matches, three cricketers were caught accepting bribes. After this, the sports minister of India wanted to pass a new law that said match-fixing in sports is illegal. This would be called a bill because it has to go through a process before becoming a law. This bill will go to the Lok Sabha. The members will have a discussion about it and then they will consider it clause by clause. After this discussion, they will vote. If the majority says they want to pass this bill, it will go to the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha will do the same thing. They would have a general discussion and then consider the bill clause by clause. After voting, if the majority says they want to pass it, it will go to the President who has to sign it and then it will become a law.
Executive Branch
Lets say that the no fixing bill has become a law. In the cabinet (executive branch), the sports minister would be assigned to enforce the no-fixing law. This minister’s job would be to make sure everyone follows this law.
Recently, in the IPL matches, three cricketers were arrested for accepting bribes and playing wrongly. Since corruption is already a big issue in India, the government probably doesn't want it to spread to the sports world. Meanwhile, the Sports Minister, Jitendra Singh is working with his department to draft a bill which will define sport fixing as an offence and will prescribe punishments for doing something wrong in sports. The punishment would be: three years in jail along with a fine. This bill applies to not only domestic matches but to international matches. That means that foreign players in India who accept bribes would be punished. After they prepare this bill, they will introduce it to the Legislature. The Legislature will then go ahead with the process mentioned.

Have you heard about the Indian actor Sanjay Dutt? The Supreme Court recently confirmed the judgment on him. In the early 1990s he was caught with unlicensed weapons. The police arrested him and filed a case against him under the TADA (terrorist and disruptive activities) act. The case was heard in a special court because it was under the TADA act. The trial went on for many years. After ten years Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years in jail. He appealed to the High Court and later the Supreme Court (appellate jurisdiction) where his sentence was reduced by a year. Since he had already spent twenty seven months in jail, he will now serve 33 months.
